WHO GETS ACNE?
According to experts four out of five people suffer from blackheads, whiteheads,
and other types of acne at
some point in their lives.
Acne affects people regardless of
age, gender, or race. It's most common in teenagers and young adults
between the ages of 12 and 24, but can also pose an
issue for those in their early thirties and beyond.
Acne is caused by a combination of factors
at work beneath the surface of our skin.
- The regularity with which an individual sheds
skin cells can change throughout their life.
- The bodies hormone balance also afffects
the rate at which the body will produce oil.
In the teen and young adult years. both males and females usually
produce more testosterone. This hormone spurs oil glands to produce more
sebum.
Acne usually appears less as we age. In the adult years our body produces
less testosterone.
Some women however have premenstrual acne flare-ups for many years.
Research has shown that genetics also play a big part in the development
and persistence of acne, so being aware of your family history as to those who
have been affected by acne in the past, could be a valuable acne prediction tool
for you as well.
Common Acne Triggers
- Cosmetic products that contain lanolin, isopropyl myristate, sodium lauryl sulphate,
laureth-4 and D & C red dyes may be too oil rich for your skin.
- The skin around the eyes is thinner than the skin areas on other parts of
the face and may be even more susceptible to acne as a result of the type
of cosmetic product used.
- Ingrown hairs may at times be mistaken for acne. Ingrown hairs are those that have
curled over and re-penetrated the skin, causing the pour in that skin area to become
somewhat inflamed. Exfoliation can help
prevent most ingrown hairs.
- Over cleansing the skin.. some people however are predisposed to blackheads because
their dead skin cells do not shed properly. The shedding process occurs every two to four weeks
depending upon age.
- Over scrubbing can strip the skin of moisture which in turn can help
the oil glands to produce more oil.
- Squeezing pores may force some bacteria back into the skin, causing both broken blood vessels and the formation of cysts.
- Hair care products such as gels, mousses, cream rinses, and pomades that contain a lot of oil.

What Can I DO??
According to Drs. Rodan and Fields at Proactiv Solution, there's still no cure for acne, with or without a prescription.
The secret to controlling acne is PREVENTION - stopping the formation of acne before it becomes a visible pimple.
To avoid the risk of permanent scars, it's important to treat acne as soon as the first signs appear.
Proactiv Solution is safe and effective for everyone, and it can help prevent blemishes from becoming a larger problem
For most forms of acne, Drs. Rodan and Fields prefer topical medications.
They may prescribe antibiotics for inflammatory nodular and cystic type acne, and Accutane for more severe cases.
Oral antibiotics and Accutane don't cure acne - like topical medications, they gain control of the problem.
Accutane is the strongest oral medication available for acne and often can make a dramatic difference. But it may have severe side effects, including depression, liver damage and birth defects if taken during pregnancy.
Patients must be under a dermatologist's supervision for the 5-month course of treatment.
Proactiv Solution on the other hand, can heal your existing acne, and help stop new blemishes from forming.
Its mild formulations gently exfoliate your skin, remove excess oil, and deliver powerful acne-attacking medicine.
Proactiv Solution
works alone or; when following your doctor's advice, in combination with a dermatologist's prescription.
